The Millennium Park Eye Center is a satellite clinic of the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. The center is directed by Dr. Dimitri Azar, Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of Illinois at Chicago.
The Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary
The Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, founded in 1858 is the oldest unit within the University of Illinois at Chicago. As it approaches its 150th year, the department carries forward its internationally renowned tradition of excellence as a leader in ophthalmic care, physician training and vision science.
The Infirmary and its satellite clinics see more than 50,000 patients each year, offering general eye care and services in 11 subspecialties. The department is consistently ranked among the best hospitals for eyes by U.S. News & World Report, and physicians in our department are named among the Best Doctors in America every year.
NIH recently ranked the department 10th nationally in overall research funding to ophthalmology departments. More than a dozen clinical studies and trials are regularly underway in the department as well, including six NEI-funded study centers. One of the distinguished features of this department is education.
Medical students, residents and clinical fellows receive training in the department under the direction of 30 full-time clinical and research faculty, many of whom are recognized as leaders in their area of specialization. The department's residency program is among the most sought after in the country, with 600 applications for the six positions available in 2004.
In April 2006, Dr. Dimitri Azar joined the department of ophthalmology and visual sciences as department head, chief of service, and professor and Field chair of ophthalmology. Dr. Azar's goal is to lead this outstanding department to become one of the top departments of Ophthalmology in the country.
“Our goal is to provide the highest level of care to our patients and our referring doctors, to provide a professional and friendly environment to our employees, and to augment our research efforts by focusing on four to six major areas of translational research that will lead to breakthroughs and, possibly, cures of important eye diseases in our community. These will be the nuclei for future centers of excellence in ophthalmology at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary.” - Dr.Dimitri T. Azar.
